Art at fingertips

Art at fingertips

Lucknow, September 16: What all do you use your nails for, just imparting a chic look when worn long? Occasional weapon for self-defense? Tool for separating things stuck together? Opening old boxes and containers? Running through the hair when nervous? Drumming them in anticipation and wait? There is one other use, a unique one that few, like only Tulsi Ram have thought of. He makes engraved and embossed impressions on paper by pressing it between the nails of his thumb and his little finger.

"While traveling in a train some 15 or 16 years ago I started fiddling with a piece of paper in my hands and pressed lines on it," says Tulsi Ram. Voila! He had discovered an art and instantly saw immense potential, worth developing, in it. Patient that he is, he started practicing more and gained steady control.

2006-09-14 23:24:54 - A very unique Photographic Picture Pairs game can also be created from 25 familiar faces, like parents, children, grand parents, cousins and friends. According to researchers at the MIT there is behavioural evidence from infant experiments and studies of prosopagnosics providing evidence for innateness of special human face recognition abilities. Some scientists suggest that faces might be processed differently than other objects with special difficulties in inverting face images, making a Photographic Picture Pairs game of familiar faces an extremely valuable and unique learning tool.

TOP STORY: Can't stop big stores says Yule

TOP STORY: Can't stop big stores says Yule

Businesses in the Hastings CBD would lose 12 percent of their custom if a large-format retail centre was established at Nelson Park, a meeting of Hastings retailers was told last night.

And that was the good news.

It could be worse if a mega shopping centre were established at a greenfields location, like one previously proposed between Napier and Hastings, which could draw nearly half the current customer base away from the Hastings CBD, they heard.

A disappointing turnout of Hastings retailers at the Hastings District Council chambers last night were given an update on the upcoming Nelson Park referendum.

ASK THE EXPERT

ASK THE EXPERT

Our children have all headed off to college and we suddenly have an empty nest. We love our house but wonder if we'd be better off moving to a smaller space.

Parents spend 18 years or more housing their children, and many don't think about what their homes will be like after the kids have moved out until they're sitting in a four-bedroom house with three of those bedrooms empty.

With the house seeming twice as big, some parents feel inclined to move to smaller dwellings. But before you call a real-estate agent, think about ways to put those rooms to use.

Sure, the spaces can be used as guest bedrooms, but here are some other ideas: Home office. Whether you handle business from home or just need some space to look over bills and mail, an empty room can easily be converted to a home office.

Heavy Metal: Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra HD details and pics

GM has revealed the details for its new full-size heavy-duty pickups, the 2500HD and 3500HD versions of the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra trucks.

The big trucks offer a huge range of configurations. Buyers can chose the ¾-ton 2500HD or full-ton 3500HD with rear wheel drive or 4WD; with standard or "dually" rear axle; regular, extended or crew cab; 6'6" or 8-foot pickup bed; a large range of gas and diesel engines; smooth-ridin' Z85 or Z71 off-road suspension package; and a variety of trim levels and interior configurations. That'll give you more choices than a McDonalds menu.

Like the Ford Super-Duty, the Silverado and Sierra heavy-duty trucks now feature unique, bolder styling to set it apart from the light-duty 1500 models. The difference can be seen in the shape of the hood, front fenders, grille, headlamps, taillamps and pickup box.
